The rainbow mountain is an impressive natural formation that exceeds reality, with a hue of colors degrading into the rocky outcropping. Out there, it stands out the bridle path, suitable for interaction with nature. On the surrounding areas you can see glacial lake formations, mountains and snow-capped peaks such as Ausangate (the highest mountain in the region), which show how surprising nature can be.
DESCRIPTION:
The rainbow mountain is located 125 km south Cusco city. It is recommended to leave quite early in the morning to appreciate its beauty in a complete tranquility.
The route we take to reach the rainbow mountain is marked by characteristic towns of the Peruvian Andes, immersed in a landscape of mountains with valleys full of farming fields. After an hour and a half approximately, we arrive at Cusipata town (3,310 m.a.s.l.), there we can have breakfast (optional). We continue climbing for another an hour and a half, until we reach Vinincunca mountain (4,989 m.a.s.l.), where we begin hiking to Rainbow Mountain. (To enjoy the view, it is recommended to hire horses)
The path that leads to our goal is covered with steppe vegetation, surrounded by high mountains; the one that stands out is Ausangate mountain (6,384 meters above sea level). On the way, you can see some South American camelids such as llama and alpaca, adapted to bear the cold and lack of oxygen.
After the hike, we arrive at a lookout point located at 5,526 meters above sea level, from which we have a 360 ° view of the landscape and the mountains. In front of this viewpoint, you can clearly see an undulating mountain, divided into shades of colors, which is why it is called “Rainbow Mountain“. The colors are due to the oxidation of some minerals in the sedimentary rock. Beside the rainbow mountain, a small path leading to the Red Valley, another natural attraction astonishing our visitors.
