Maras, Moray and Salineras

Tour duration: Full day

Maras, Moray and Salineras tour allows you to know Chinchero, Moray and the Salineras. Chinchero, located 28 km north Cusco city, was the tenth Inca emperor´s resting palace, Tupac Inca Yupanqui, where the Spanish invasion built a beautiful colonial church. Moray was an agricultural laboratory for the adaptation and developing of hybrid seeds used for nourishment. In the salt mines of Salineras we find thousands of shallow pools where the salt is obtained by evaporation.

CHINCHERO:

The archaeological complex of Chinchero was the tenth Inca emperor´s royal retreat, Tupac Inka Yupanqui. The site is surrounded by ornamental terraces, which highlight the great ceremonial plaza, several remains of Inca dwellings and shrines. On the Inca construction of Chinchero you can see a beautiful colonial church, which was built following stamping out of idolatries law that ordered the destruction of Inca temples for evangelizing purposes.

MORAY:

In the archaeological complex of Moray, we can appreciate circular terraces, like circular rings, ranging from the largest to the smallest, from the top the bottom. Within the terraces of Moray, the various climatic varieties are perceived, the deeper elevation of the circular terrace, the higher the temperature. Inca agronomists and scientists used such weather conditions to study, adapt and even crossbreed tem to develop a new crop species.

SALINERAS:

Salineras (salt mines) are part of a natural geological outcropping, which consists of a spring that emanates salty water from earth. Such liquid is distributed through small channels into more than 4000 shallow ponds. By the natural evaporation of salty water, local farmers obtain salt crystals of different varieties and qualities. The one that most characterizes the Salineras is “pink salt”, known for its therapeutical uses and healthy for human consumption.
