Humantay Lake

Tour duration: Full day

Humantay Lake is a unique excursion, due to the beautiful landscapes presented on the way, such as the Apurímac river canyon that contrasts with the high elevation of the snow-capped mountains. The Humantay lake is a natural water reserve that comes straightly from the Humantay mountain snowmelt. Its crystalline waters have striking colors that turn from blue to emerald, impossible to reproduce in photographs. In the entire environment, you can breathe the pure air and feel the energy of its mystical mountains.

DESCRIPTION:

The Humantay lake is located 128 km/79 miles northwest Cusco city in the district of Mollepata. It is recommended to leave very early in the morning to appreciate its beauty in complete tranquility.

The first section of the trip, approximately three hours, leaves towards the town of Mollepata (2,803 meters/9,196 feet above sea level), to have breakfast (optional). The route to this place is defined by its incontestable landscapes, the Apurímac river canyon (1,780 meters/5,839 feet above sea level) the lowest and the snowy Salkantay (6,270 meters/20,570 feet above sea level) the highest.

The adventure on foot starts from the town of Soraypampa (2,900 meters/9,514 feet above sea level), a bridle path that goes up to the Humantay lake (4,200 meters/13,779 feet above sea level), despite the height the path is a mystical experience, you feel the pure environment, away from noise and pollution.

After an hour and a half of walking, we reached our goal. The Humantay lake (4,200/13,779 feet meters above sea level) is located at the bottom of the snow-capped mountains like Humantay (5,473 meters/17,956 feet above sea level) and Salkantay (6,270 meters/20,570 feet above sea level). The natural beauty of the lagoon creates an atmosphere of tranquility, away from routine life, where one can thank the Apus and Pachamama (mountain protectors and mother earth), through the K’intu ceremony (ritual of the three coca leaves), interacting with the nature.
